Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Service Moderation and Security Measures

A representative for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. Her staff has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may expose users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
