Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such medications should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
